Many years ago, we went to Rottnest on my brother’s boat and spent the day at Parakeet Bay. I was fascinated by the waves breaking over the low rocks between the larger rocky outcrops and spent some time taking photos, trying to catch just the right wave.
I was so focused on the distant rocks that I didn’t even realise I’d also captured the bird in flight. What a bonus!
I loved the photo so much that when I became a manager and scored my own office, I had it printed on canvas to hang on the wall.
Many years later, that canvas was hanging in my home when I looked at it and thought, “I’m an artist now. I can repaint that scene in oils.”
And so I did.
