I had an idea for this painting long before I actually painted it – figures set against Perth’s big blue sky, with a splash of orange to bring it all to life.
I tried to create the scene during a Granny’s Day outing with the grandkids at Kings Park, but things didn’t quite go to plan. The blue sky was cloudy, the orange outfits I’d requested mostly didn’t eventuate, and although I took plenty of photos, none quite captured what I had imagined.
I put the idea aside for a few months before deciding that, as the artist, I didn’t actually need the perfect photograph. With the help of my graphic designer daughter, I extracted figures from several of my photos, created my own composition using the elements I liked best, and finally, I got my orange against that big blue sky
At 36 × 48 inches, this is my largest painting to date – and one I really enjoyed bringing to life.
